Unteroffizier Hartl entered service in February 1941, was assigned to FFS A 42 and FFS A/B 42, and trained as a pilot at FFS B 21 (received his pilot’s license on July 8, 1944). Between August 31 and October 9, 1944, he was at FFS B 36. Between October 10, 1944, and March 14, 1945, he was assigned to Gruppe I./JG 107 in Hagenow-Land, and between March 15, 1945, and March 31, 1945, he was assigned to 1./JG 104 (Wing Commander Maj. Reinhard Seiler) in Fürth-Herzogenaurach; I. Gruppe was disbanded on April 28 of that year.

Promotions: February 1, 1942, to Private; March 1, 1943, to Lance Corporal; and December 1, 1944, to Corporal.
